CAPE ANN COMMUNITY CINEMA

WE ARE YOUR CURE FOR THE SUMMERTIME BLUES [7/30/09]

I was sitting on one of the cinema’s couches during lunch the other day when I got to thinking (a dangerous prospect, I know). The sun filled the room (Google it here if you too sometimes forget what it looks like), and I thought, “What a shame it is that others don’t get to enjoy this space during the day.” And then, the eureka! moment.

So, since I am here working all day anyway, the “Cinema Café” shall come to be within two months time, by the time of our September 29th Grand Opening. It will open at 10:00am every day, and will be a vibrant, comfortable place to relax in our comfortable chairs and couches with a book or video (plasma screen and fireplace coming soon) or work with free wireless internet (and Verizon Wireless phone subscribers will not find themselves in the no-bars cellular morass that is downtown). We have a robot (that we have named “Klaus”) that makes great coffee, tea and hot chocolate (while actually altering the laws of physics), a variety of ice cream snacks and now, real butter on the popcorn. And as soon as I can find a place that sells frozen, chocolate covered bananas on a stick (which are awesome), we’ll sell those, too.

And we came up with another idea this week. Rather than install the sound treatment panels in the front of the cinema (on the left and right), we are going to install bookshelves. Lining the walls with window-height shelves filled with books and videos (for loan and for sale) is super-effective sound treatment, with the bonus of having a continuous shelf on top on which to perch a variety of interesting knick-knacks and objets d’art donated by our patrons.

Again, we are seeking artists to paint 2′ x 4′ ceiling tiles, which will adorn the ceiling around our Snack Stand. Please e-mail me back with interest, along with a link to sample work or attached JPEG files. We will debut these works in late September, and are really looking forward to showcasing local talent. After all, community is our middle name. Literally.

Remember to buy your membership package if you haven’t already. It’s just $60.00 for a lifetime membership, and it includes 10 movie passes (12 if you buy online), free access to our sizable DVD lending library and the right to continue to buy tickets at the 10/$60 price.

See you sometime in the next week, over this year’s Oscar-winning Best Foreign Language Film, DEPARTURES? (And you can make it to the last show of RUDO Y CURSI if you leave the house right now.)

Too tired for a clever sign-off,
Rob

THIS WEEKEND & NEXT WEEK:
DEPARTURES Friday 7/31 through
Thursday 8/6
@ 7:30pm Nightly
2008 ACADEMY AWARD WINNER!
BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

“Unforgettable…a deeply touching movie exploring an incredible range of emotions.” -Jeffrey Lyons, Reel Talk

“The most moving film I have ever seen commemorating the bonds between the living and the dead.” -Andrew Sarris, New York Observer

Departures is Yojiro Takita’s deeply moving and irreverently amusing meditation on love, acceptance and coping with loss. It is the story of Daigo, a devoted cellist in an orchestra that has just been dissolved and who is suddenly left without a job. Daigo decides to move back to his old hometown with his wife to look for work and start over. He answers a classified ad entitled “Departures” thinking it is an advertisement for a travel agency only to discover that the job is actually for a “Nokanshi,” a funeral professional who prepares deceased bodies for burial and entry into the next life. While his wife and others despise the job, Daigo takes a certain pride in his work and begins to perfect the art of acting as a gentle gatekeeper between life and death, between the departed and the family of the departed. The film follows his profound and sometimes comical journey as he uncovers the wonder, joy and meaning of life and living.

A film by Yojiro Takita; PG-13, 130 min, In Japanese with English subtitles

I wonder what the economic climate was like when this building was built.   Buildings like this just aren’t constructed regularly in our day, I guess because it is cost prohibitive.  Do you think it came down to economics or just a sense of pride when the people who built this building designed and had it [...]

But by Greenheads! I got as far as the end of Wheelers Point when I was attacked by hungry stinging Greenheads! With river speed limits at 5 mph the temptation to hit the throttle was almost over-powering! Trying to navigate and take photos while these horsefly like demons buzzed around my head and ankles was a challenge to say the least. I came about and headed back to the harbor. Once back

The Department of Justice has agreed that bringing a New Jersey adult entertainment producer to trial in Montana, just because that is where an FBI agent was when he received the allegedly “obscene” materials is inconsistent with DOJ policy.
